A Proud History
Methodist circuit riders began preaching in the metro-east as far back as 1793. The Site of Illinois’ first Methodist church building is remembered with a marker in Glen Carbon. It was known as Bethel Chapel and was constructed in 1805. By 1817, the little Bethel Chapel was in such disrepair that members met at the home of Josias Wright, an early Methodist settler.
Edwardsville Methodists grew in number and began meeting in the old courthouse and in the library. In 1828, Thompson’s chapel was built at 201 St. Louis Street. In 1853, a new brick chapel was completed on the same site. Again, the facility had to be changed to meet the changing needs of the congregation and a new church was built. It was dedicated in 1884 and the church name was officially changed to St. John's.
St. John's rebuilt again on St. Louis Street in 1924. In the1950’s and 60’s expansions were made to the building. At 75 years plus, the building served longer than any of the other buildings that preceded it. In 1999, the congregation started looking to the future for a place to grow and have plenty of parking. In 2001, the congregation approved the purchase of 25 acres on Marine Road. The congregation began meeting at the new facility in May 2006. This new site will help ensure a promising future for St. John’s United Methodist Church in Edwardsville.
