Over
31,000 children will
die today in developing countries,
half of them from hunger-related causes.
One
possible reaction
is despair and resignation - yet
experts have told us for 40 years
that the end of widespread hunger is within
our grasp. Effective
solutions are complex and must include more than charity.
Government has
its role to play because of its immense power
to make decisions that, on
a massive scale, either help the
poorest improve their economic situation,
or actually undermine
the good work of churches and charities.
For over 30 years, Bread for the World has been a Christian
voice urging
Congress to adopt policies that will help end the
tragedy of extreme poverty
and hunger. Bread is an interfaith
group, and the local chapter meets the
first Tuesday of each
month from 11:30 to 1:00, rotating our meeting place
among the
members’ various Edwardsville and Glen Carbon churches. We
bring our own brown-bag lunches. Our meetings include
worship, study of hunger
and poverty issues, and some type
of
action – usually letter-writing, but sometimes a decision to
make phone
calls, or a group visit to our Representative’s office.
We would love to
have you visit our next meeting.
“ Speak up for people who cannot speak for
themselves...
Protect the rights of the poor and needy.” (Proverbs
31:8-9)
